Are bacteria found in bottled water?
Bacteria are found in most of the bottled water sold for drinking purposes. This is because bottled water is usually disinfected to remove harmful organisms, but is not sterilized. Sterilized water, which is completely free of bacteria, is primarily reserved for use in pharmaceuticals.

Many studies have shown that the levels of bacteria in bottled water increase quickly to maximum levels after six weeks of un-refrigerated shelf life. However, since ultraviolet disinfection (using UV light), as well as ozonation (using ozone or oxygen), destroys harmful organisms, this natural re-growth of harmless flora in the water is not considered to be a health hazard. Refrigeration of bottled water is recommended after the water container is opened in case harmful bacteria are reintroduced at this time.
