| Can drinking untreated water cause illness? |
| Untreated or inadequately treated water from wells and other sources can contain sufficient numbers of disease-causing organisms such as bacteria, parasites and viruses that cause illness. Many governmental health agencies, however, have coordinated strict bottled water regulations, as well as guidelines for municipal drinking water systems, so consumers can be assured that the quality of the water they are drinking both from the bottle and the tap is high.
