What are some current statistics regarding the bottled water industry?
A $35 billion dollar worldwide industry, the sales of bottled water continue to grow at a phenomenal pace. Considered the fastest-growing major U.S. beverage category, bottled water consumption rose 8.3 percent in 2000, breaking the 5-billion gallon mark for the first time ever. In addition, the individual average intake of bottled water grew by 1.3 gallons in 2000 to 18.2 gallons. Leading the pack in terms of sales of bottled water in 2000 is Poland Springs with $406.2 million; Arrowhead with $315 million; and Aquafina with $289 million.

This fastest growing segment of the beverage industry can attribute its boom to several factors. Baby boomers are maturing and their tastes, as well as waistlines, are guiding them toward more natural, less caloric beverages like bottled water. America's passion with fitness, combined with a near-prohibitionist atmosphere about alcohol, has also driven consumers to beverage alternatives like bottled water. Finally, the deteriorating taste and quality of tap water and fear of unknown contaminants have made bottled water the perfect solution for water drinkers.
