| Sales of Bottled Water |
| A $35 billion dollar worldwide industry, the sales of bottled water continue to grow at a phenomenal pace. Likely spurred by heightened interest in water quality and fitness and health awareness, increasing sales of bottled water have recently given beverages such as beer, coffee and milk a run for their money as the second most popular beverage behind carbonated soft drinks. Considered the fastest-growing major U.S. beverage category, bottled water consumption rose 8.3 percent in 2000, breaking the 5-billion gallon mark for the first time ever. In addition, the individual average intake of bottled water grew by 1.3 gallons in 2000 to 18.2 gallons. Leading the pack in terms of sales of bottled water in 2000 is Poland Springs with $406.2 million; Arrowhead with $315 million; and Aquafina with $289 million.
